Considered a management unit: An aquatic resource or fishery is
declared as [Fishery] Management Unit if it is
effectively the focus for the application of selected
management methods and measures, within the broader
framework of a management system. According to the FAO
Glossary for Responsible Fishing, "a Fishery Management
Unit (FMU) is a fishery or a portion of a fishery
identified in a Fishery Management Plan (FMP) relevant
to the FMP's management objectives." FMU's may be
organised around fisheries biological, geographic,
economic, technical, social or ecological dimensions ,
and the makeup and attribute of a fishery management
unit depends mainly on the FMP's management
objectives. |
Jurisdictional distribution: Jurisdictional qualifier (e.g.
"shared", "shared - highly migratory") of the aquatic
resource related with its spatial distribution. |
Environmental group: Classification of the aquatic
resource according to the environmental group (e.g.
pelagic invertebrate, or demersal fish) to which the
species belong. |

Water Area OverviewRed mullet - Aegean Sea Aq Res Struct Biological Stock: Biological Stock Stock assessment in the GFCM area of application is often conducted by management units, based on GSAs. This method does not ensure that the whole stock is assessed, since stocks may cover several different management units. In some cases, when there is scientific evidence of a stock spreading through different GSAs, as well as information on species from different GSAs, existing information is combined across GSAs. This is then defined as a “joint stock assessment of a shared stock”. The GFCM recommends that when scientific evidence of shared stocks exists, joint stock assessments should be attempted. A number of activities aimed at achieving a better definition of stock boundaries are currently being conducted at the GFCM level. [The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries, 2016] Exploit Red mullet is exploited by bottom trawlers and various small-scale fisheries using gillnets. Most catches come from the Greek fleets exploiting the area and the majority originates from bottom trawlers (~80percent). The Greek bottom trawl fishery has multi-species characteristics and similarly to most Mediterranean demersal trawl fisheries, captures more than 100 commercial species. However, few species, such as red mullets, European hake and shrimps, compose the main bulk of landings, with red mullet being one of the most important targets. Bio Assess Data Biological information on growth, i.e. the von Bertalanffy parameters, as well the length-weight relationship were derived within DCF. Natural mortality vector was estimated using the Chen and Watanabe method while the proportion of mature individuals at age was based on recent bibliography The official landing data as reported through the HELSTAT were used in the assessment. Catch-at-size data, as reported in DCF, were used in the assessment. Both catch numbers at length and index number at length were sliced using the l2a age slicing function of FLR. Assess Models Type: Age-structured a4a A SCAA model (a4a) was used and FLBRP package for yield per recruit analysis, both part of the FLR. The assessment was carried out over the period 2003-2019, calibrated with fishery independent survey abundance index (MEDITS). To select the final model for assessment, combinations of various options for submodels regarding fishing mortality, survey catchability and stock recruitment were investigated. The best model was selected in the basis of better residuals and retrospective patterns. Results In the most recent years, biomass shows increasing trends, while F has shown a constant decreasing trend since 2007. Sci Advice Not to increase fishing mortality. Sources FAO. 2021.
