Considered a management unit: An aquatic resource or fishery is declared as [Fishery] Management Unit if it is effectively the focus for the application of selected management methods and measures, within the broader framework of a management system. According to the FAO Glossary for Responsible Fishing, "a Fishery Management Unit (FMU) is a fishery or a portion of a fishery identified in a Fishery Management Plan (FMP) relevant to the FMP's management objectives." FMU's may be organised around fisheries biological, geographic, economic, technical, social or ecological dimensions , and the makeup and attribute of a fishery management unit depends mainly on the FMP's management objectives. |
Jurisdictional distribution: Jurisdictional qualifier (e.g. "shared", "shared - highly migratory") of the aquatic resource related with its spatial distribution. |
Environmental group: Classification of the aquatic resource according to the environmental group (e.g. pelagic invertebrate, or demersal fish) to which the species belong. |
Reference Year: The Reference Year is the last year considered in the stock assessment and/or fishery status. |

Water Area OverviewRed mullet - Northern and Southern Adriatic Sea Aq Res Struct Biological Stock: No Stock assessment in the GFCM area of application is often conducted by management units, based on GSAs. This method does not ensure that the whole stock is assessed, since stocks may cover several different management units. In some cases, when there is scientific evidence of a stock spreading through different GSAs, as well as information on species from different GSAs, existing information is combined across GSAs. This is then defined as a “joint stock assessment of a shared stock”. The GFCM recommends that when scientific evidence of shared stocks exists, joint stock assessments should be attempted. A number of activities aimed at achieving a better definition of stock boundaries are currently being conducted at the GFCM level. [The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries, 2016] Exploit After analysing the results of the STOCKMED project, it was concluded that the region represented by GSAs 17 and 18, corresponding to the Adriatic Sea, is considered inhabited by a unique stock unit. During the WGSAD (FAO headquarters, Rome, Italy, November 2017), a first attempt of joint assessment with the SS3 model was presented. This attempt was made on the basis of the analysis of the survey indices, showing a very similar increasing trend in both areas in the recent years, and considering that the western side of both GSAs was characterized by a decrease in effort. Red mullet landings in GSAs come predominantly from otter trawls; a small amount is reported for small-scale fishing gear (gillnet and trammel net). Bio Assess Data The MEDITS indices by length were estimated treating the two GSAs combined as a unique area, starting from the TC files and re-stratifying the single hauls in the TA files. The hauls carried out in Albanian and Montenegrin territorial waters under the AdriaMed umbrella were also considered. Commercial catch and LFDs were available from 2002 only in GSA 18 (Italy); therefore, it was decided to use data from 2006 onwards, as LFDs are available in the two GSAs from most of the countries. The Albanian landing was collected from the last year report since 2012, while for the previous years an average was used, being more in line with the order of magnitude of recent landing data, recently reviewed by the Ministry. Albania provided 2019 landing and LFD. Montenegrin landings were collected from the previous report and for 2019 an average of the last three years was used. For Croatia the RECFISH data were used for the year outside DCF. The LFDs of all the fleets and the MEDITS LFDs on the whole area were age sliced by means of a deterministic slicing (l2a function available in FLR) using the von Bertalanffy parameters reported in Carbonara et al. (2018) without any correction to the t0. The length-weight relationship parameters available on the DCF database were used to calculate the mean weight-at-age. Age slicing and the computation of mean weight-at-age were performed by sex, then age structures were pulled together, while the mean weight-at-age for sex combined was estimated as a weighted average of the mean weight-at-age by sex. Assess Models Type: Age-structured a4a SCAA (a4a, FLR), FLBRP package for Y/R analysis and Flash package for short-term forecast. Respect to the model of last year, the f sub-model was simplified. Results SSB showed an increasing pattern starting from 2015. F has been decreasing but is currently higher than the reference point. Sci Advice Reduce fishing mortality.
