Stock assessment in the GFCM area of application is often conducted by management units, based on GSAs. This method does not ensure that the whole stock is assessed, since stocks may cover several different management units. In some cases, when there is scientific evidence of a stock spreading through different GSAs, as well as information on species from different GSAs, existing information is combined across GSAs. This is then defined as a “joint stock assessment of a shared stock”. The GFCM recommends that when scientific evidence of shared stocks exists, joint stock assessments should be attempted. A number of activities aimed at achieving a better definition of stock boundaries are currently being conducted at the GFCM level. [The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries, 2016]
Exploit

Deep-water rose shrimp is one of the main crustacean species for trawl fisheries in GSA 4. It is an important component of landings in western area, occasionally targeted by trawlers operating on the upper slope. More than 50 percent of catches came from the Alboran part of GSA 4 in 2019. The annual landings fluctuated during all the assessed series and landings show a decreasing trend of catches in the last two years.

Data

Length frequency data from commercial catches of five years (2015-2019) coming from western area are used to extrapolate national landing. Growth parameters from GSA 4 (CNRDPA, 2017), ogive maturity from the Algerian national data collection and M vector obtained by ProdBiom (Abella et al., 1999) were used to run a pseudo-cohort analysis.

Type:  Age-structured
VIT

National catch-at-age data are constructed using Plyr package (slicing), pseudo-cohort analysis and Y/R analysis were performed by VIT software using each year separately and the average of three years (2015-2017, 2016-2018 and 2017-2019).
Results

Age classes 0-2 are the most exploited in GSA 4; Fcurrent is higher than F0.1, which indicates an intermediate overfishing status of deep-water rose shrimp in the joint area.
Sci Advice

Reduce fishing mortality.
