Bio Assess

Assessment year: 2017
The CECAF Working Groups have adopted the following Biological Reference Points (BRPs):
- Limit Reference points: BMSY and FMSY
- Target Reference Points: B0.1 and F0.1
Stock status is assigned based on current estimates of fishing mortality (Fcur) and biomass (Bcur) relative to these target and limit reference points (Bcur/BMSY, Fcur/FMSY, Bcur/B0.1, Fcur/F0.1). The results from the stock assessment of this stock are found under the “Biological state and trend section”.
Data

The Working Group used catches of Dentex spp. for Gabon, Congo, and Angola from 1995 to 2016 and abundance indices of R/V Dr Fridtjof Nansen from Angola. The input values for the model parameters were as follows: r = 0.20 per year; K = 60 000 tonnes and BI/K = 50 percent.

Type:  Biomass-aggregated
Schaefer dynamic production model

The Schaefer dynamic production model, implemented on an Excel spreadsheet or worksheet was used to assess the state of the stocks of Dentex spp. by the Working Group. This model is described in detail in FAO, 2012.
Results

The model provides an unsatisfactory fit (FAO, 2020).
DISCUSSION: No conclusion on the status of Dentex spp. stock can be made based on the model. Since 2010, the surveys data shows a decrease of the stock and the levels of the last years are more or less the same. Therefore, adequate measures must be taken to allow stock renewal.
Sci Advice

The Working Group recommends a reduction in effort (FAO, 2020).
