Stock assessment in the GFCM area of application is often conducted by management units, based on GSAs. This method does not ensure that the whole stock is assessed, since stocks may cover several different management units. In some cases, when there is scientific evidence of a stock spreading through different GSAs, as well as information on species from different GSAs, existing information is combined across GSAs. This is then defined as a “joint stock assessment of a shared stock”. The GFCM recommends that when scientific evidence of shared stocks exists, joint stock assessments should be attempted. A number of activities aimed at achieving a better definition of stock boundaries are currently being conducted at the GFCM level. [The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries, 2016]
Exploit

The striped red mullet is one of the important commercial species in the Mediterranean waters of Egypt (GSA 26). Its landings were 779 tonnes in 2014, 529 tonnes in 2015, 479 tonnes in 2017 and 380 tonnes in 2019. Five species (striped red mullet, red mullet, goldband goatfish, Por's goatfish (Upeneus pori) and the Red Sea goatfish (Parupeneus forsskali) of the family Mullidae were recorded in the catch of Egyptian Mediterranean (GSA 26). The landed catch of striped red mullet came mainly from the trawl vessels and constituted about 33 percent of the goatfishes in GSA 26, according to the species composition estimated from personal pilot survey.
Bio Assess

Data

The sampling process was within a fisheries data collection system supported by the FAO EastMed project. Monthly samples were collected from landings during the period from the beginning of 2011 to the end of 2012, and during 2016. In 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, sampling was on a bimonthly basis. The monthly LFDs were raised to the monthly landings and analysed by the electronic length frequency analysis for estimating growth parameter (ELEFAN) program incorporated in LFD analysis software for the estimation of growth parameters for the sexes combined. The length-weight relationship, the length at first maturity (L50) and the sex ratio were also studied. ProdBiom was used to estimate natural mortalities.
Assess Models
Type:  Size-structured
VIT

VIT software was used for pseudo cohort analysis. In addition, the Y/R analysis implemented in the VIT was applied for the calculation of the reference point F0.1. LBSPR and LIME were used as additional methods to support the findings of VIT.
Results

Sex ratio (percent females / total) was 0.43 during the study period. The stock of each year was assessed separately to compare results. Age composition analysis indicates that the majority of the catch of this species is represented by age groups 1, 2 and 3. The Y/R analysis indicated a current level of fishing mortality as 0.497 for 2019, while the target reference point F 0.1 was around 0.29 during the years of study. The ratio between Fc and F0.1 was 1.69.
Sci Advice

Reduce fishing mortality.
