Exploitation

Factors affecting the fisheries and the stock

There is a licensing scheme and effort limitation in Area Vb. The minimum landing size for tusk in Area Vb is 40 cm.

The TAC for the EU fleet was 1155 tonnes per year for 2003 onwards in EU waters and international waters. Norway caught 5000 tonnes in 2003–2005 and 4000 tonnes in 2006 in EU waters. Norway has bilaterally agreed quotas in Va and Vb.

The effort in the NEAFC regulatory area was frozen for 2003, then reduced by 30% in 2004 and a further 5% in 2007.
Assessment

Assessment Model
Methodology

Scientific basis

Total landings and cpue series were available for all relevant fleets, discard data were not available.

Comparison with previous assessment and advice

The interpretation of the information on the stock has changed since the advice in 2006 because the cpue information shows different trends in different areas. The advice has remained the same.

Reference Point

Reference points for this management unit have not been calculated. Reference points that were previously suggested for tusk would be based on unexploited abundance; however, the data to calculate these points do not exist.
Scientific Advice

Single-stock exploitation boundaries

Cpue in these areas has been at a reduced level but may have been increasing in recent years. Because of these uncertainties, ICES recommends to constrain catches to 5000 t and to collect information that can be used to evaluate a long-term sustainable level of exploitation.
Management

Management Advice

Management considerations

Tusk is a bycatch species in longline, trawl, and gillnet fisheries. Norway has traditionally landed a large share of the total international landings. Around 90% of the Norwegian landings are taken by longliners.
Biological State and Trend
Exploitation rate: Undefined
Abundance level: Undefined

Cpue indicators for Divisions IVa, VIa, and Vb suggest that tusk abundance has been at a reduced level but may be increasing.
