| more>> <<less Overview: The small-scale fisheries are mainly largely comprised of two ethnic groups: Kru that are comprised of indigenous tribes of Liberia and have been fishing since the establishment of the country; mainly using small dug-out canoes (around 7m) with paddles or sails and a crew of 1-3 persons using multi gears (hooks, long-lines and gill nets) targeting all species, and comprising about 75% of the canoes. The Fanti (Ewe) from Ghana mostly using large plank canoes (about 12-15m) with 8–40 horse power (hp) and a crew of 3 to 20; this group of fishermen and their families livelihoods depend on the fisheries sector. This sector use passive and active gears depend on the types and methods of fishing. The gears use in the sector include ring gill nets, set gill nets , hook and lines, trapline or long lines during both the dry and rainy seasons. Some species caught by the sector include Alectis alexandrinus, Apsilus fuscus, Aridae, Brachyura, Carangidae, Chrysichthys spp, Elasmobranchii, Epinephelus spp, Ethmalosa fimbriata, Galeoides decadactylus, Lutjanus spp, Osteichthyes, Penaeidae, Polydactylus quadrifilis, Pomadasys spp, Pseudotolithus spp, Sardinella spp, Scombridae, Solea spp, Sphyraena spp, Stromateus fiatola, Thunnini, Xiphias gladius.
