Stock assessment in the GFCM area of application is often conducted by management units, based on GSAs. This method does not ensure that the whole stock is assessed, since stocks may cover several different management units. In some cases, when there is scientific evidence of a stock spreading through different GSAs, as well as information on species from different GSAs, existing information is combined across GSAs. This is then defined as a “joint stock assessment of a shared stock”. The GFCM recommends that when scientific evidence of shared stocks exists, joint stock assessments should be attempted. A number of activities aimed at achieving a better definition of stock boundaries are currently being conducted at the GFCM level. [The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries, 2016]

Exploit
 

Deep-water rose shrimp is caught by bottom otter trawling in the Strait of Sicily together with other commercial species such as Norway lobster, giant red shrimp, European hake, scorpionfish (Helicolenus dactylopterus), greater forkbeard (Phycis blennioides), Atlantic horse mackerel and monkfish (Lophius spp.). Scientific data available indicate that exploitation by the fishing fleets of Tunisia, Malta, Libya and Italy are targeting a single shared stock of deep-water rose shrimp. Four fishing segments were considered in the stock assessment: Italian coastal trawlers, Italian distant trawlers, Tunisian trawlers and Maltese trawlers. Information on Libyan fisheries were not currently available. Sicilian coastal trawlers (length overall (LOA) between 12 m and 24 m) targeting deep-water rose shrimp are based in seven harbours along the southern coasts of Sicily. These trawlers operate mainly on short-distance fishing trips, which range from one to two days at sea. Sicilian distant trawlers (LOA > 24 m) perform longer fishing trips, which may last up to four weeks. Sicilian distant trawlers operate offshore, in both Italian and international waters of the south-central Mediterranean. In the Maltese Islands small vessels measuring 12 m to 24 m in length target rose shrimp at depths up to 600 m. Fishing grounds for Maltese vessels are located to the north and north-west of Gozo. Tunisian trawl vessels that target rose shrimp measure around 24 m in LOA. Tunisian vessels operate primarily in northern Tunisia (GSA 12) where 90 percent of the country’s total deep-water rose shrimp catches originate. The great majority of these catches are landed in the ports of Bizerte and Kelibia.

Data

Catch-at-age and landing data matrices are from Italy (otter trawls 12-24 m and otter trawls > 24), Malta and Tunisia from 2007 to 2019. Number at age from MEDITS survey in GSA 15 and 16 for tuning. VBGF and length-weight relationships: L∞ = 42.705, k = 0.67, t0 = -0.208, a = 0.0029, b = 2.4818 for females and L∞ = 33.56, k = 0.73, t0 = 0.13, a = 0.0034, b = 2.4096 for males. M was estimated by Prodbiom Method (forced).

The assessment was performed using XSA as implemented in the FLR. According to the recommendations of the WG, current F was obtained as average of the last three years (2017-2019).
Results

Current F(0-2) estimated by the average of three years was 1.23. F0.1 estimated by using FLR routine and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Y/R version 3.3 ranged between 0.84 and 0.93. The SSB estimated by the average of three years (2017-2019) was falling within the 66th percentile of the SSB time series.
