Stock assessment in the GFCM area of application is often conducted by management units, based on GSAs. This method does not ensure that the whole stock is assessed, since stocks may cover several different management units. In some cases, when there is scientific evidence of a stock spreading through different GSAs, as well as information on species from different GSAs, existing information is combined across GSAs. This is then defined as a “joint stock assessment of a shared stock”. The GFCM recommends that when scientific evidence of shared stocks exists, joint stock assessments should be attempted. A number of activities aimed at achieving a better definition of stock boundaries are currently being conducted at the GFCM level. [The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries, 2016]

In the Balearic Islands (western Mediterranean), commercial trawlers develop up to four different fishing tactics, which are associated with the shallow shelf, deep shelf, upper slope and middle slope (Guijarro and Massutí, 2006 and Ordines et al., 2006), mainly targeting: i) picarel, striped red mullet, common octopus and a mixed fish category on the shallow shelf (50-80 m); ii) European hake, Mullus spp., john dory and a mixed fish category on the deep shelf (80-250 m); iii) Norway lobster, but with an important bycatch of big European hake, Lepidorhombus spp., Lophius spp. and blue whiting on the upper slope (350-600 m) and iv) blue and red shrimp on the middle slope (600-750 m). Striped red mullet is one of the target species in the shallow shelf, although it is also caught in the deep shelf. It is also the target species of part of the small-scale fleet, being caught during the second semester of the year mainly by trammel nets but also by gillnets.

Data

Size composition of commercial trawl catches and official landings (2000-2019), CPUE data from bottom trawl surveys (2001-2020) and from commercial fleet (2000-2019). All information was recomputed from a natural to an artificial year, from 1 July to 30 June. The final year used corresponds to July 2019 to June 2020 and 2020 survey. Growth parameters were computed from otolith reading in the study area. Length- weight relationship and maturity ogive were obtained in the area from monthly biological samplings in the Spanish National Data Collection Programme. M vector was computed using PRODBIOM.

Both XSA and a4a were used. The final advice came from a4a. Y/R analysis and short-term forecast were carried out. The assessment is an update from the previous year.
Results

Recruitment showed a decreasing trend between 2004 and 2011, an increasing trend since then, being quite stable for the last four years. SSB showed a decreasing trend between 2006 and 2013, with an increasing trend since then. F showed the lowest values of the data series in the last year.
