Overview: The small-scale fisheries are largely comprised of the Kru ethnic group that are comprised of indigenous tribes of Liberia and have been fishing since the establishment of the country; mainly using small dug-out canoes (around 7m) with paddles or sails and a crew of 1-3 persons using multi gears (hooks, long-lines and gill nets) targeting all species, and comprising about 75% of the canoes. Some species caught by the sector include Alectis alexandrinus, Apsilus fuscus, Aridae, Brachyura, Carangidae, Chrysichthys spp, Elasmobranchii, Epinephelus spp, Ethmalosa fimbriata, Galeoides decadactylus, Lutjanus spp, Osteichthyes, Penaeidae, Polydactylus quadrifilis, Pomadasys spp, Pseudotolithus spp, Sardinella spp, Scombridae, Solea spp, Sphyraena spp, Stromateus fiatola, Thunnini and Xiphias gladius.
